Late Miocene

Accelerated rifting in eastern Africa created more variability in rainfall between lowlands and highlands. This was the age of apes (hominoids), who lived in trees and mostly ate fruits, nuts and other forest products. At this point, hominoids were not high on the food chain and often fell victim to predators such as hyenas. The lineages of hominins from other apes diverge as grasslands expand.
